Majestic scale and smooth curves

Technical and logistical complexity

Spire

Project: Spire
Location: Lachlan’s Line at Macquarie Park, Sydney
Period: April 2019 – February 2020
Client: Landcom – Greg Betts

We delivered the late Matthew Harding’s artwork after the artist’s death in 2018.

Set Square Productions sensitively took on the process of design development and fabrication, all the while remaining faithful to the original vision.

The Spire’s majestic scale and smooth curves belie its technical and logistical complexity.

The level of detail in the stainless steel sculpture is extraordinary.

It stands 21m tall, weighs 11 tonnes and is made up of:

– 9,693 individual stainless steel components

– 6 kilometres of stainless steel rodding

– 3,795 individual rods rolled to 1,265 different radii

Each component was shaped by hand and assembled with more than 100,000 welds.

This new parkland site is the perfect location for Matthew Harding’s significant and dramatic artwork.

"Matthew Harding's site specific artworks have a poetic relationship with the landscape."
Mark Neilsen, Director
"Our team worked tirelessly to deliver Matthew's creative vision."
